Program Overview
The English minor offers students an overview of the history, conventions, and practices of literature and rhetoric in English, while allowing them to experience a diversity of texts through electives of their choice.
The emphasis on critical thinking and analytical writing makes the English minor valuable for students who are pursuing majors in a variety of disciplines, including the fine arts, humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. Students in the English minor program also have the opportunity to develop their skills as writers of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction prose.
Careers and Graduate School
Completion of the English minor will enable students to pursue career opportunities in which critical analysis of information and highly developed writing skills are required.
Admission Information
Freshman/First-Year Admission: No requirements beyond University admission requirements.
Change of Program Policy: For students currently enrolled at 51社区, adding the English minor requires a 2.0 GPA. Students choosing to add this program should contact the Director of Undergraduate Studies in the English Department for assistance.
External Transfer Admission: For students currently enrolled at institutions other than 51社区, transferring into an English minor entails no requirements beyond University admission requirements. Students should contact the director of undergraduate studies in the English Department for assistance.

The English minor requires a minimum of 18 hours.
Introductory Course Requirement
Complete one of the following courses:
- ENG 2010 - Introduction to Prose Fiction and Nonfiction Credit Hours: 3
- ENG 2020 - Introduction to Poetry and Drama Credit Hours: 3
Early Survey Requirement
Complete one of the following courses:
- ENG 2510 - British Literature I Credit Hours: 3
- ENG 2530 - American Literature I Credit Hours: 3
Late Survey Requirement
Complete one of the following courses:
- ENG 2520 - British Literature II Credit Hours: 3
- ENG 2540 - American Literature II Credit Hours: 3
Elective Courses
Complete 9 hours of English (ENG) courses, at least two of which must be at or above the 3000-level. ENG 1510, ENG 1610, ENG 2800, ENG 3***J, ENG 4510, ENG 4520, ENG 4911, and ENG 4912 cannot be used to meet the elective requirement.
