Fee Descriptions

Instructional Fee: This fee is uniformly charged to all students for educational and associated operational support of the institution.

General Fee: This fee is uniformly charged to all students for non-instructional services.

Non-Resident Surcharge: Students who are non-residents of the State of Ohio will be assessed a non-resident tuition surcharge. The State of Ohio provides a tuition subsidy for residents of Ohio, which is largely funded by the taxpayers of Ohio. In order to receive the Ohio residency for tuition purposes, a student would have to prove that they meet the qualifications set by the Ohio Department of Higher Education in the Ohio Administrative Code, Chapter 3333.1.10 and Ohio Revised Code, Chapter 3333.31. Ohio residents who fail to prove their registration with the Selective Service System will also be assessed a non-resident tuition surcharge.

Career and Experiential Learning Fee: The Career and Experiential Learning Fee provides funding for services and resources that promote students’ engagement in one or more of six types of experiential learning: community engagement, creative endeavor, internships, leadership, research, and study abroad/away. Experiential learning has been proven to have positive outcomes for student learning, degree completion, and success in the job market after graduation.  Given the high impact nature of these practices, this fee seeks to increase access to them by providing programmatic support for faculty/staff who facilitate experiential learning as well as direct support for students seeking experiential learning opportunities.

Course Fees: Course fees are designed to fund additional costs for specific courses. Examples include, but are not limited to, lab supplies, third party testing fees, manuals, etc.  Course fees for specific classes are listed in .

Digital Course Materials: This fee is course-specific and funds the cost of electronic course materials (most often an e-textbook). Students have access to the on the first day of classes. This electronic content is offered to students at a significantly lower than market price. Students can opt out of being charged for the materials but then must find those materials on their own. Program Fees: Program fees fund education-related components of the program. Contact the program director for more information on the purpose and use of these fees. For graduate program fees, refer to the Off Campus Graduate Programs tuition schedule for a list of programs that include a program fee.

Specialized Services and Materials Fee: This required fee is program-specific and provides funding for specialized materials and services. This fee does not cover the cost of textbooks or basic educational supplies. Consult with the program director for more information on the purpose and use of these fees. Refer to the Off Campus Graduate Programs tuition schedule for a list of programs that require a specialized services and materials fee.

Technology Fee: This fee is college-specific and supports instructional technology and other equipment and supplies used to enhance student learning within that particular college. *This fee does not apply to students in The OHIO Guarantee.

Student Info System/Network Fee: This fee supports improved access to and assistance with information technology to enhance student learning. *This fee does not apply to students in The OHIO Guarantee.

Zanesville Security Fee: This fee supports security service on the 51ÉçÇø Zanesville Campus. *This fee does not apply to students in The OHIO Guarantee.

Residence Hall: The cost for housing on campus. The amount varies by room type.

Meal Plan: The cost of an on-campus meal plan. The cost varies by meal plan selection.

Waivable Fees

Student Health Insurance: 51ÉçÇø requires all students enrolled in Athens credit hours to maintain an active health insurance policy. Students that have an existing health insurance policy that meets the university waiver requirements may complete a waiver application to remove the health insurance charge. The waiver option will be available on the MyOHIO Student Center once registration charges have been assessed for the term. A waiver is required only once each academic year. WellBeing:  The Wellbeing Fee is a university discount program that helps reduce patient cost for select services through Counseling and Psychological Services (CPS). The waiver option will be available on the MyOHIO Student Center once registration charges have been assessed for the term. A waiver is required once each term. See www.ohio.edu/counseling/wellbeing-fee for more information. *This fee does not apply to students in The OHIO Guarantee.

Student Legal Service: The  is a law office for 51ÉçÇø students. Two licensed attorneys provide students with legal representation, advice, and education. CSLS also provides contract reviews, mediation services and notary services. There is no limit on the number of a times students can use the service during the term. Every Athens campus student is automatically enrolled for this service at registration for the term. The waiver option and waiver deadline will be available on the MyOHIO Student Center once your registration charges have been assessed for the term. A waiver is required once each term.

Other Fees

Late Fee: Penalty of 1.5% of unpaid balance for failure to pay by the stated due date.

Payment Plan Fee: Fee to enroll in a semester payment plan. Generally, tuition and fees are due in full at the beginning of each semester. 51ÉçÇø offers an installment payment plan for families interested in that option. See www.ohio.edu/bursar/payment-plan for more information

Late Registration Penalty: Penalty for retroactive registration after the registration deadline has closed for the semester.

Graduation Application: This fee is assessed to students applying for graduation. *This fee does not apply to students in The OHIO Guarantee.

Late Graduation Application: Penalty for submitting the graduation application after the deadline.

Re-application for Graduation: This fee initiates the review of a student's requirements for a student who previously paid the graduation application fee but did not meet graduation requirements.

Room Condition: Penalty for any physical damages made to on-campus housing facilities, replacement or repair of any university housing items, replacement of residence hall lost keys/new key cores, lockouts, and any items that were confiscated due to being prohibited or causing a safety hazard.

New International Student Fee: One-time fee charged to new international students. This fee supports orientation costs and international student programming.

Community Standards Fine: Penalty for violating the Student Code of Conduct.

Bobcat Student Orientation Fee: Student orientation materials, meals, and one night’s lodging on campus are included in The OHIO Guarantee+. This fee supports costs associated with family and/or guests attending orientation with the student.

Transcripts: The official record of a student's enrollment at 51ÉçÇø. Transcript orders can be placed with the Office of the University Registrar: www.ohio.edu/registrar/transcripts.
