Master of Fine Arts in Printmaking

What You’ll Learn

Devoted to developing diverse and exceptional artist printmakers, the printmaking department's mission is to create an environment promoting critical dialogues that investigate contemporary art issues as well as the process of creating art. Undergraduate students become proficient in traditional and alternative print practices. The graduate program develops students who are competitive in educational and professional printmaking fields.

The department is committed to encouraging self-exploration as artists and experimentation within the mediums of lithography, screen printing, relief printing, intaglio, digital printmaking, and paper making. Students often investigate mixed media, incorporating graphic design and photographic elements in their work. The printmaking faculty has a strong commitment to providing one-on-one instruction to its graduate and undergraduate students, creating collegial and mentoring relationships.

In addition, the extensive collection of modern prints is an important learning tool for 51ÉçÇø's printmakers to study about print technique and major movements in art.

Facilities

Seigfred Hall dedicates the entire second floor to the arts of printmaking and photography. The print area is comprised of individual studios for each of the major traditional print media. Also available are the equipment for photographic applications in all print media, and a state-of-the-art computer facility specifically tailored to the needs of contemporary print artists. Each year the printmaking majors and faculty work in concert with a visiting artist to produce new prints to add to the Trisolini Print Collection.

Career Opportunities

Our students regularly go on to receive Fulbright Awards, national artist-in-residencies, gallery representation, university teaching positions and other types of professional positions in the field as post-graduates. The 51ÉçÇø printmaking department has successfully assisted undergraduate and graduate students in obtaining internships and work as professional printers in such well known studios as Cone Editions, Echo Press, Landfall Press, Nexus Press, Tyler Graphics, ULAE, Vermilion Press, and Women's Studio Workshop.

Applying to the Program

Please prepare the following items as part of your application. All information must be uploaded and received by February 1st.

To apply to this MFA program you'll be required to submit the following:

Application Fee: $50 for US Citizens, $55 for International (credit card or electronic check only)

  • Official set of transcripts: These may have to be sent by us postal mail, or depending on your prior institution, may have an electronic record that can be submitted with your online application. Please review the definition and requirements for official transcripts here
  • Statement of Intent: This is typically 1-2 pages. Why are you applying for graduate school? Why 51ÉçÇø? What are your future goals? Is there any information about your past experience/skills that is not reflected on your resume?
  • Artist Statement: This is typically one page. Tell us about your current research interests, influences, and artwork.
  • Resume/CV
  • Portfolio: Documentation of original artwork
    • Submit 20 images or other documentation (video, audio, etc) of recent, original artwork.
    • Along with each artwork, include artwork information and descriptive text where appropriate
    • Detail slides are acceptable where necessary.
  • Three Letters of Recommendation: Submit the contact information for three references. Our system will automatically send recommenders a request via email for their submission. Their responses should be submitted by the February 1st deadline.

Note: Except for the official transcripts, NO materials should be sent through standard mail. Portfolios on CD or DVD will not be considered.
