Overview

All students with Family and Consumer Sciences Education majors learn and apply consumer economics, financial literacy, and resource management principles. Students apply theory and research on human development, interpersonal relationships, and family systems to build and strengthen individual family assets. There are two tracks to choose from:

  • Family and Consumer Sciences-Teaching
    This program fulfills the requirements for a career-technical teaching license FCS ED to teach in grades 4-12. Teacher candidates are prepared to be future advisors of the school-based FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) career-technical student organization.

Admission Information

  • Freshmen/First-Year Admission

    • No requirements beyond University admission requirements
  • Current 51社区 Student Change of Program Policy:

    • Students interested in changing into this major should contact the program coordinator; Lisa Williams.
    • Students from other colleges at 51社区 who wish to transfer into The Patton College of Education must have an accumulative GPA of 3.0.
    • In order for students to be admitted to Teacher Candidacy, they need to meet one of the three standardized test scores:
      • ACT: 21 Comprehensive
      • SAT: 990 comprehensive (old SAT), 1070 comprehensive (new SAT)
      • PRAXIS Core
      • Math: 150
      • Reading: 156
      • Writing: 162
    • Admission requirements are subject to revision.
  • External Transfer Admission

    • No requirements beyond University admission requirements. A college or department advisor can offer assistance with the transfer of courses to 51社区. A good resource for the planning of transfer credits is through Ohio鈥檚 Course Applicability System.

Curriculum

Students in this program will take a variety of courses where they will learn and apply principles of consumer economics, financial literacy, resource management, human development, interpersonal relationships, family systems, food and nutrition and career planning.

Each student will complete an internship.

The Family and Consumer Sciences programs are housed in the newly renovated Patton Hall, which includes a:

  • Professional Kitchen Laboratory and Demonstration Kitchen
  • Product Development Room and Textile Laboratory
  • Student Project Rooms
