51社区 offers the which prepares students to address the ongoing demand for individuals who possess 鈥渟oft skills鈥 and knowledge for the workplace pertaining to leadership, interpersonal skills, teamwork and problem solving. Relating to a variety of career paths, the Technical and Applied Studies baccalaureate program and specifically the TAS certificate prepare students for a diverse workplace that is inclusive and collaborative to best optimize the effectiveness of work groups and teams. The certificate courses explore these concepts as students apply these skills to their discipline. Those 鈥渉ard skills鈥 are complemented with the traits, knowledge and 鈥渟oft skills鈥 developed and applied in this certificate to set the graduate apart and provide what employers seek.
TAS classes, taught by experienced professionals, provide practical workplace and leadership skills that will enable successful students to enter and excel in a variety of professions. The TAS certificate can complement many traditional undergraduate degree programs in the fields of business (e.g., data analytics), health, technology (e.g., computer technology, engineering technology) and public service (e.g., law enforcement or criminal justice).
To complete the certificate, students will select three TAS courses from topics such as workplace effectiveness, collaboration, leadership, and diversity and ethics. Students must select an additional course from the Science in Applied Management (SAM) program on topics including supervision and managerial communications to finish the required 15 credit hours.
Courses
Courses in the certificate offer students the opportunity to prepare for a highly technical work environment while supplementing their current major with the soft skills necessary to be successful in today鈥檚 workplace. Select three courses:
- Approaches to Workforce Effectiveness (TAS 3010)
Develop skills that employers need including oral communications and listening skills. Students will be introduced to the complex workforce and the skills necessary for the 21st century workplace. TAS 3010 satisfies OHIO BRICKS Speaking and Listening Bridge. - Diversity, Ethics, and Collaboration (TAS 3110)
Course instruction includes developing healthy relationships in the workplace. Students will examine the approaches to developing employee and leadership roles as ethical workers, the relationships for teamwork, and the understanding of diversity鈥檚 value including the advantages it brings to work and life. TAS 3110 satisfies the OHIO Bricks Capstone or Culminating Experience. - Leadership and Workplace Effectiveness (TAS 4110)
Course explores the contemporary workplace effectiveness and organizational development concepts that guide individual, team and workplace change. Students will develop their leadership expertise and gain insight into drivers for leadership theory and practice today. - Collaboration in the Workplace (TAS 4440)
Discover the advantages and examine the disadvantages of collaboration in the workplace. Students explore elements of effective collaboration and are encouraged to recognize personal strengths and weaknesses in a variety of situations.
The requires selection of one additional Science in Applied Management (SAM) course. Students must select one additional course:
- Supervision Management (SAM 3050)
Course introduces students to the field of management at the supervisory level including the functions and roles of management in organizations. Students will obtain supervisory skills necessary for today鈥檚 workplace. - Strategic Managerial Communication (SAM 3250J)
Students with basic business form and format competencies for letters, memos, reports, and presentations are provided opportunities to practice and improve written communication skills vital to career success in this writing enriched course.
