Media Organization Spotlight: Thread
From the glitz and glam of Cher to the 鈥渨ho wore it best鈥 posts, Thread Magazine and the executive board of 鈥渢hreadies鈥 have been bringing fashion, glamour, and creativity to the OHIO campus since 2010. Following Thread on social media allows you to enjoy sneak peeks and behind-the-scenes posts of their latest unique fashion shoots. Wondering where the Thread team gets their inspiration for the potential pieces in the magazine issues they publish each semester?
鈥淒eciding pieces for future issues is a collaborative effort,鈥 said Riley Runnels, Thread鈥檚 editor-in-chief. 鈥淲e give the staff a chance to throw their ideas in the ring, and then the executive board members brainstorm our ideas by looking at what鈥檚 trending in fashion, pop culture, and social justice, as well as what鈥檚 trending locally in Athens, to accommodate a national and local level with our work. We keep up through Twitter; other magazines like Vogue, Vanity Fair, and Harper鈥檚 Bazaar; and simply by noticing what鈥檚 going on around us and feeding off of each other鈥檚 minds and trends鈥.
On top of that, the team strives to take existing fashion trends and make them accessible to the student body. If you can鈥檛 afford some of these trends or you want to start sustainable fashion practices, the magazine also gives some helpful tips and tricks. Articles include suggestions for shopping at thrift stores such as Goodwill as well as insight for students who are looking to make some extra money by selling their clothes on websites like Instagram, Depop, Poshmark, and Mercari.
The magazine also writes articles about local clothing businesses in Athens, so students are aware of the presence the stores have in town. The magazine focuses on providing information to OHIO students on current fashion trends and other fashion related topics. Students who are interested in getting involved with the magazine can do so in several ways.
鈥淎t Thread, we鈥檙e always looking for more teammates,鈥 Runnels said. We have positions open in writing, designing the layout of the tab, photography, videography, styling (including fashion, makeup, and hair), modeling, public relations, copy editing and business ventures. Basically we say if you have an area you鈥檙e interested in, we can accommodate it and find a place for you at Thread.鈥
Many members have a wide variety of majors including fashion design, visual communication, photography, journalism, and more.
