Overview 

The Scripps College of Communication School of Visual Communication is proud to announce its new exchange program with Augsburg University of Applied Science in Germany.  

Founded in 1710, Augsburg University of Applied Science is one of the oldest art schools in Germany. The Faculty of Design has acquired a reputation in type design and printing techniques. With over 600 students, it is now Bavaria's largest design school. Students not only learn the fundamentals in visual art and design, but also different approaches to problem solving and design thought. Augsburg offers undergraduate coursework Communication Design and Interactive Media. 

Augsburg is a lively German university city of 280,000 people located in southern Bavaria. Located an hour from Munich, Augsburg is one of the oldest Germany cities with a fascinating history as a former Free Imperial City. Visiting students find it easy to settle in for a semester. Augsburg has a vibrant cultural scene with many museums, music venues, festivals and art galleries. The city is located in a beautiful environment with large forests, rivers, and streams.  

Augsburg University of Applied Science offers a pre-semester language and orientation course at minimal additional cost. Early arrival and participation in this course is highly recommended. 

Living Arrangements 

Augsburg University of Applied Science will support exchange students with finding housing in university local residence halls or in private accommodations. Students cook their own food and/or eat in inexpensive university cafeterias and restaurants.  

Program Dates 

Actual dates will vary based on host institutions academic calendar, but below are estimated timeframes.

  • Winter Semester: October through February  
  • Summer Semester: April through July  
  • Academic Year: October through July

Application for spring/summer semester 2025 is now open! Apply no later than October 1, 2024.

Academics  

Exchange participants will enroll full-time in courses alongside German and international students. Courses will be taught in English. Students will receive transfer credit for their coursework abroad.

Cost  

Students should plan for 12-20 credit hours of tuition*, health insurance, administrative fee, and out-of- pocket costs.  Below is the student budget worksheet for this program, which outlines these costs. 

Items that are not related to the program (ie. additional entertainment, souvenirs, extra travel, contingency funds) are not included in the cost estimates provided and should be budgeted for separately.  

*Note: 

  • Non-resident surcharge waived for the credit hours associated with this program. 
  • If you are nominated to this program, you will be required to pay a deposit to confirm your participation. The deposit is a down payment on the total costs to be billed by OHIO and is determined by the total cost of the program.

Eligibility and Requirements 

The Augsburg exchange program is open to undergraduate VisCom students majoring in graphic design. Applicants should have overall GPA of 3.0 or above. A current portfolio is required.

Students who will be on probation at any point during the program for a conduct offense that took place less than a calendar year from the program start date may not study abroad. Read the entire conduct policy 

This program does not accept NON-OHIO students. 

To be considered for this program, participants must have a at least a high school diploma or the equivalent (e.g. GED) by the start date of the program. Additionally, students should have completed one year of college by the time of travel. Students enrolled in College Credit Plus (CC+) are not eligible for study away programs.

Entry and Exit Requirements 

U.S. citizens are required to have a valid U.S. passport when traveling outside of the United States. If you plan to study or travel abroad in the next year,    now. Some countries also require a visa to legally enter or reside in the country. 

Students on the Augsburg Exchange program who are US citizens are required to apply for a residence permit in order to reside in Germany for over 90 days. Normally, students enter Germany on a tourist visa and apply for their residence permit while in Germany with the support of Augsburg University. Students will need to show sufficient funds to support themselves while in-country as part of this process.
