Creating New Study Abroad/Away Opportunities
The Office of Global Opportunities (OGO) is proud to support 51社区's strategic priority to provide experiential learning opportunities for all students.
Creating an OHIO-Credit Program
Faculty-led study away programming is an integral part of that strategy which offers the following benefits to students:
- OHIO course offerings that map directly to a participant鈥檚 DARS
- A cohort of OHIO students who travel and experience new places, cultures, and academic settings together
- OHIO faculty or staff members serving as program directors who provide instruction, academic support, and on-site guidance throughout the duration of the program.
- Program dates that align with OHIO calendar, especially winter break, spring break, and summer
- Pre-Departure meetings with faculty and fellow participants to prepare logistically and academically for program travel
Step 1: Create Program Proposal
Discuss your intentions and programmatic goals with your academic leadership. Submit a program proposal which outlines the big picture goals for the student experience.
Visit the following webpage for more details about the proposal process:
Note: Some study away experiences are approved and managed through separate processes.
- Faculty interested in pursuing a program offering College of Business courses should contact Andrew Pueschel and Stephanie Sharp.
- Faculty interested in pursuing the development of a program that is based locally should contact the Office of Experiential Learning.
- Faculty interested in establishing a program that is primarily internship, consulting or practicum-based should consult with their college.
If approved, the program will need to be reviewed by the Study Away Committee (SAC). Please contact Catherine Marshall, marshalc@ohio.edu, for access to the SAC proposal.
Step 2: Develop Your Program
Once your proposal is approved, you will be assigned an OGO program coordinator as well as an Experiential Learning team member to assist you through the program planning stages. You will work together to build out the inclusions and activities that support the intended academic and experiential goals of the program. Your OGO point person will serve as liaison to your selected onsite program provider and share the fully articulated program requirements.

Step 3: Finalize and Recruit Students
With detailed information from your onsite program provider and support from your OGO point person, you will finalize the program budget and begin recruiting students to your program.
Exchange Start-Up Information
Over the years, OHIO has entered into a number of exchange agreements. Exchanges offer the benefits of"
- careful assessment of curricular and academic compatibility for sending and receiving students,
- promotion of ongoing and long-term academic connections between faculty and students,
- maintenance of tuition at the home/sending institution, and
- in some cases, diversity of international students within the undergraduate student population.
Exchanges are most successful when there is (1) direct faculty and departmental support, (2) long-term commitment and (3) an agreement is preceded by a careful analysis of specific curricular fits.
Promotion of exchange balance is vitally important to ensuring a successful exchange. Achieving a balanced number of students sent and students received is a perpetual challenge at OHIO and at most US universities; in short, more students are eager to attend a US college for a term or two than US students are eager to venture abroad. Consequently, OGO encourages carefully considered exchanges, preferably driven by student desire and study abroad trends.
Faculty, departments and colleges interested in pursuing an exchange agreement, should make contact Kate McClure katebmcclure@ohio.edu in the Office of Global Affairs to discuss their plans.
