Daniel Stein
Assistant Professor of Instruction in Classical and Musical Theater Voice Coordinator of Opera Theater Chair, Voice Division
Tenor Daniel Stein, whose voice has been described as 鈥渨arm and flexible,鈥 has an international career performing opera, concert, and recitals. An Ohio native, he has performed leading roles with many professional opera companies, including Asheville Lyric Opera, Dayton Opera, Greensboro Opera, Opera Carolina, Opera Columbus, and others. Roles Stein has performed include Conte Almaviva in Rossini鈥檚 Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Alfredo in La Traviata (Verdi), Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi (Puccini), Sam Polk in Susannah (Floyd), among others. Stein has also had the pleasure of creating the roles of William in the world premiere production of The Flood Korine Fujiwara and Stephen Wadsworth), and the role of Alan Seymour in the world premiere production of Picnic (Libby Larsen and David Holley), based on William Inge鈥檚 Pulitzer Prize winning play.
An avid concert artist, Stein has performed concerts throughout the United States. Some of the great works he has been soloist for include Carmina Burana (Orff), The Creation (Haydn), Glagolitic Mass (闯补苍谩膷别办),&苍产蝉辫;Liebeslieder Walzer (Brahms), Mass in C-minor (Mozart) Messa da Requiem (Verdi),Messiah (Handel), Requiem (Mozart), and many others. Stein has performed as soloist with such orchestras as the New York City Chamber Orchestra (at Carnegie Hall), Filharmonie Brno (Czech Republic), Arizona MusicFest鈥檚 Festival Orchestra, Portland (ME) Symphony, Charlotte Symphony, Dayton Philharmonic, Greensboro Symphony, South Carolina Philharmonic, and many others.
Dr. Stein is Assistant Professor of Instruction in Classical and Musical Theater Voice at 51社区 teaching Applied Voice and also serving as Coordinator of Opera Theater and Co-Coordinator of the Voice Division. Prior to his appointment at 51社区, Dr. Stein served on the voice faculties of Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio; High Point University in High Point, North Carolina; and Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina. His responsibilities have included teaching Applied Voice, Lyric Diction, and Class Voice; Music Directing productions for the Department of Theatre and Dance (Winthrop), and performing as faculty soloist for recitals and large ensemble concerts. Dr. Stein鈥檚 students have gone on to perform with regional opera and theatre companies as well as gaining acceptance in prestigious graduate programs (such as the Boston Conservatory).
Dr. Stein received his Doctor of Musical Arts from The Ohio State University, Master of Music from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and his Bachelor of Music from Wright State University. Stein is a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS), the College Music Society, Phi Kappa Phi (National Honor Society), and is a board member for Mid-Ohio Opera. He resides in Columbus, Ohio with his wife and their three daughters.
