Students interested in taking summer semester classes may be eligible to receive federal and state financial aid, including grants and loans. Summer semester begins the financial aid year at 51ÉçÇø. Summer students who have received their Financial Aid Offers can view their aid in their . If your financial aid doesn't include summer, the first step is to register for summer classes. Once you are registered, you can email financial.aid@ohio.edu to request your aid be applied over summer, fall, and spring semester, if applicable.
Types of Aid and Eligibility
- Institutional Scholarships – 51ÉçÇø scholarships, including those in the OHIO Excellence Award Program, cannot be received in the summer, in most cases. If you are graduating after summer or fall semester, you can email financial.aid@ohio.edu to request consideration for an exception.
- Outside Agency Scholarships – Scholarships from other organizations that are $1000 or less are applied toward fall semester only. Those scholarships greater than $1000 are applied toward fall and spring, unless otherwise indicated by the agency. To receive an outside scholarships during the summer, a letter from the agency specifying summer semester, can be sent to financial.aid@ohio.edu or Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships, 51ÉçÇø, 020 Chubb Hall, Athens, OH 45701
- Federal Pell Grant and Ohio College Opportunity Grant (OCOG) – These grant programs offer additional funds for summer semester enrollment. Students can receive the Federal Pell Grant for up to twelve full-time semesters (or part-time equivalents). Students can receive OCOG for up to ten full-time semesters (or part-time equivalents). Receiving Pell Grant or OCOG funding for summer will cause you to reach the lifetime limit of those programs sooner than only receiving funds in fall and spring semesters.
- Federal Work-Study (FWS) – Students may be eligible to work all or part of the summer semester through FWS. To determine your eligibility, your FWS supervisor must email financial.aid.employment@ohio.edu and request additional FWS funds for summer employment. Students who are enrolled for summer semester, may work up to 25 hours per week based on your eligibility for funding. Students may be considered for FWS employment during summer semester even if they aren’t enrolled in classes. Students who are eligible for FWS funds for summer and who aren’t enrolled, may work up to 28 hours per week.
- Federal Direct Loans – Subsidized and unsubsidized student loans are awarded to students based on their academic level and their dependency status from the FAFSA.

These loan amounts can be divided over summer, fall, and spring semesters. No additional amount is awarded to students choosing to enroll in the summer semester. Federal Direct PLUS and Graduate PLUS Loans can include summer semester and can be increased to accommodate additional summer semester costs pending credit approval.
- Private Loans – Private loans can include summer semester and can be increased to accommodate additional summer semester costs pending credit approval.
We recommend that students regularly . You can view the amount of Pell Grants you have received and how much eligibility you have remaining in that program. You should also review the amount of Federal Direct Loans you have borrowed. We suggest students only borrow the amount necessary to fund required educational expenses.
