Expert Bio

Michael Kopish is a professor of teacher education at 51社区鈥檚 Patton College of Education with expertise in instructional practices and assessments that emphasize disciplinary literacy in social studies. His major interests include teaching and learning in social studies classrooms; inclusive disciplinary literacy practices; and youth civic engagement.

Kopish has authored numerous academic articles for scholarly journals, such as Democracy in Education and the Journal of Research on Adolescence. He is the co-editor of the book Schools and Urban Revitalization: Rethinking institutions and community development (2014, Routledge). In addition, he's spoken at conferences across the country and served as an educational consultant to numerous clients.

Prior to 51社区, Kopish taught at Plymouth State University, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Northeast Iowa Community College.

He is a member of the American Education Research Association, the National Council for the Social Studies, the Ohio Council for the Social Studies, the American Psychological Association, the Society for the Teaching of Psychology, and Teachers of Psychology in Secondary Schools.

Kopish has a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with a minor in Educational Psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Masters of Arts in Teaching from Coe College.
