Interprofessional Care Certificate Overview
The current trend for health care services is holistic care by a team of health care professionals. OHIO's blended Interprofessional Care certificate provides students with knowledge and skills in interprofessional education and practice in health care. Through coursework and experiential learning opportunities, students acquire competencies relating to interprofessional communication, teamwork, mutual respect and shared values, and the roles and responsibilities of a health care team. Students who gain expertise in learning about, with, and from other health care professions have an edge in a job market looking for people who can work on health care teams.
Opportunities upon Completion:
Students learn about: a) how effective communication supports a team approach to the maintenance of health and the treatment of disease, b) the roles and responsibilities of professionals on the health care team; c) how to work with individuals of other professions to maintain a climate of mutual respect and shared values, and d) how to apply relationship-building values and the principles of team dynamics to perform effectively in different team roles to plan and deliver patient-/population-centered care that is safe, timely, efficient, effective, and equitable.
The certificate is appropriate for any student who plans to work in the health care industry and distinctive because it provides students with the opportunity to learn about several different allied health care professions and how those professions work together in teams to improve medical outcomes.
Required Courses:
The Interprofessional Care Certificate Requires at least 12 credit hours:
One introductory course (see the for selections)
IHS 2112 - Introduction to Interprofessional Education and Practice in Healthcare
IHS 4430 - Working on an Interprofessional Health Care Team
IHS 3250 or 2220 - Interprofessional Health Promotion/Cultural Competency in Interprofessional Health Care
Graduation Requirements:
1) Minimum semester hours required: 12
2) Minimum GPA: 3.0
3) Qualifying exam: No
Admission Requirements:
Students must be a CHSP major in order to enroll in this certificate program. Students are encouraged to apply for the certificate in their freshman or sophomore year in order to best facilitate timely completion of the certificate requirements.
