WOUB News Summer Internship Program is now underway

Ten full-time and five part-time college students started their summer internship program in the WOUB Newsroom on May 13. The 11-week program pays interns to work at WOUB Public Media and provides them with an immersive practical experience while producing daily content in a professional multimedia organization.

鈥淭he WOUB News Summer Internship is a wonderful opportunity for students to gain hands-on media experience every day,鈥 said WOUB News Editor-in-Chief Atish Baidya. 鈥淭he interns have the chance to work as news media professionals and improve on their skills while serving the region.鈥

The internship provides students with real world experience while working with WOUB professional staff that challenges them to grow as media professionals. While learning, the interns are covering stories and producing newscasts that provide vital news and information to the region.

鈥淭hey get hands on experience, make connections with local officials and learn how to build source relationships, and learn how to handle challenging situations while out on stories,鈥 said Baidya.

The 11-week WOUB Summer Internship runs through July 26. Summer interns use a multiplatform approach to produce and report for WOUB TV鈥檚 NewsWatch, a nightly half-hour newscast, WOUB AM/FM and woub.org and are supervised by WOUB professional news and technical staff while receiving a stipend of $15 an hour.

The Charles and Lucille King Family Foundation WOUB Internship Fund (in Memory of Jan and Olivia Sole) helps support salaries for the student interns. The fund was established in memory of Jan Sole (1956-2007) and her late daughter, Olivia Gray Sole (1989-2004). Jan Sole graduated from OHIO鈥檚 Journalism school in 1979 and worked at WOUB as a radio producer and host of the station鈥檚 classical music program for 25 years.
