Alumnus shares OHIO tradition through new 51社区 Eastern scholarship

51社区 Eastern students who plan to pursue one of the more than 250 programs offered at the Athens campus now have the opportunity to receive a $5,000 scholarship due to the generosity of 51社区 alumnus George J. Kontogiannis.

The George J. Kontogiannis Scholarship for Eastern Campus Relocating Students was established to support a regional campus student鈥檚 financial need as they relocate to 51社区's Athens campus.

鈥淭his scholarship would enable a worthy student to complete their education at the Athens campus and experience firsthand the history, diversity, and spirit that makes 51社区 great,鈥 Kontogiannis said.

Kontogiannis is the owner of George J. Kontogiannis & Associates, an architectural firm he established in 1966, just three years after graduating from 51社区 with a Bachelor of Architecture in 1963. The firm is recognized for large-scale, medium to high-end residential, commercial, religious, congregate care, nursing home and other medical facility architecture. The firm鈥檚 structures can be found throughout the United States.

鈥淥ften individuals just beginning college may not have the financial capability to attend the Athens campus and will go to a regional campus like 51社区 Eastern,鈥 Kontogiannis said. 鈥淗owever, as they continue their education, they want to have the main campus experience and complete their education in Athens.鈥

OHIO meta-majors and relocation pathways allow students to choose a general field of study and pursue degree options that may not be offered at OHIO Eastern. Students can enroll to begin courses at a regional campus and choose to relocate to the main campus in Athens to finish their degree.

鈥淭his scholarship is an exciting opportunity because it increases access to more degree programs for area students that want to attend 51社区,鈥 Dean of Campus and Community Relations David Rohall said. 鈥淣ow that OHIO regional campuses have meta-major pathways, the timing of this generous gift is perfect.鈥

Kontogiannis鈥 generosity extends across his alma mater, where he has established scholarships that support OHIO Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine students and the Collegiate Recovery Community in the Division of Student Affairs. He has a passion for supporting mental health and addiction resources. To show his commitment to medical education, he named the third floor Quiet Study Area in the Heritage Hall in Athens.

鈥淭he generosity of our donors helps make our programs accessible to all students,鈥 Rohall said. 鈥淪cholarships offer a dependable source of funding because they are set up to provide support for students as they pursue their education.鈥
