Fall Grad Spotlight: Andrew Ray

Andrew Ray graduates this semester with a bachelor鈥檚 degree in history from the College of Arts and Sciences. Ray chose 51社区 Zanesville for its proximity to home and family in Cambridge, Ohio. After graduating, he plans to continue his education by pursuing his master鈥檚 degree in history.

What was your ah-ha moment at OHIO Zanesville鈥攖hat point where you said to yourself, 鈥淚鈥檝e got this!鈥?
I took a pretty difficult class last fall semester. It was a GIS class with Professor Sinha. I had no idea what to expect going into that class, but it was way more difficult than I anticipated. I stuck through it and applied myself and made it out of there with a good grade. That鈥檚 when I realized I鈥檝e got this.

Why did you choose OHIO?
I went to West Virginia University for a year and a half before I transferred back home to Ohio. I have brothers that went to 51社区. I missed home, plain and simple.

Who were your favorite professors and how did they make an impact on your life?
Professor Gaurav Sinha was one of my favorite professors. He was constantly pushing his students to push themselves and learn more. There were some things I learned in his class that will stick with me.

Dr. Korcaighe Hale. Need I say more? Her classes were always interesting, and you can tell she cares about her students. Her door was always open should you need anything.

What was the hardest hill you had to climb at OHIO? And how did you overcome challenges or obstacles in your path?
COVID was the toughest obstacle during my time at OHIO. Working full-time as a kitchen manager in Cambridge and balancing work with school and family obligations was very tough at times. I hunkered down, however, and here I am getting ready to graduate.

What are your favorite OHIO memories?
My favorite memories will always be with my friends down in Athens.

What鈥檚 the one thing you would tell a new OHIO student not to miss?
Seize every opportunity that comes your way. If you have friends down in Athens, go visit them.
