Fight the phish this Cybersecurity Awareness Month

As part of Cybersecurity Awareness Month the Office of Information Technology (OIT) would like to stress the importance of learning the best ways to fight phishing.

Phishing is a type of social engineering attack that is often used to steal personal information. Cybercriminals usually do this by crafting emails that appear to be from a reputable company or individual that asks for your information. Once you submit your information, the cybercriminal uses it for their own gains.

There is no concrete way to prevent phishing attacks, so awareness and knowledge are the strongest lines of defense. In order to help the University community identify phishing messages and to prevent students, faculty and staff from falling victims to scams, OIT has put together these tips for recognizing and reporting phishing.
