OHIO named one of the nation鈥檚 top military friendly schools

51社区 has been named one of the nation鈥檚 top military-friendly schools for the 11th consecutive year by Viqtory Media, a veteran-owned company and publisher of G.I. Jobs magazine.

The Military Friendly Schools庐 list honors colleges, universities and trade schools across the country that are doing the most to embrace America鈥檚 military service members, veterans and dependents as students and ensure their success on campus.

鈥51社区 is honored to have so many service members studying on our campuses, and we are proud to help them succeed in their studies and their careers,鈥 President Hugh Sherman said.

To determine a school鈥檚 military friendly ranking, Viqtory weighs several metrics consisting of academic policies and compliance; graduation and career outcomes; culture and commitment; military student support and retention; admissions and orientation; and financial aid and loan repayment.

鈥淲e are proud that those efforts and support at the University have been recognized once again for valuing our veterans,鈥 said Terry St. Peter, director of OHIO鈥檚 Veterans and Military Student Services Center and a retired lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army.

St. Peter said that 51社区 consistently ranks as one of the top military schools in the country because of University policies that accommodate the rigid schedules of both active service students (drills/activations) and veterans (VA appointments).

鈥51社区 has been extremely accommodating to help meet those needs,鈥 he said.

This past year has really put those standards to the test, St. Peter said. He said it has been extremely difficult for National Guard students, who were being deployed by the state of Ohio to assist with COVID-19 operations.

He also commended faculty and colleges for going to great lengths to accommodate military students, as well as the student body for being both welcoming and open-minded.

鈥淚鈥檓 grateful for the support of the leadership, not only at the University but at the colleges that support our students,鈥 St. Peter said. 鈥淲e really do appreciate the efforts to allow students to use those earned benefits.鈥

At 51社区, the Veterans and Military Student Services Center provides programs and services for student veterans, military personnel and their family members, including:

  • A wide variety of social and academic support outlets
  • Participation in a military-focused transition seminar
  • Priority course registration
  • Assistance transitioning from military to academic life
  • Assistance with deployment and training issues
  • Access to OHIO鈥檚 Commuter and Veterans Lounge
  • Graduation stoles recognizing their branch of service and rank

OHIO ranked gold among Tier 2 research institutions for 2022-2023. Even though OHIO recently achieved Tier 1 status as a research institution, it was ranked among Tier 2 schools because Viqtory based its ranking on the school鈥檚 standing last year while it was still Tier 2.
