Linguistics Department celebrates 50th anniversary with spring colloquium series

The Linguistics Department in the College of Arts and Sciences continues its 50th anniversary colloquium series this spring by bringing back alumni and faculty from around the world to celebrate the program鈥檚 mission and its resilience.

Throughout the spring semester, be sure to watch for the return to Gordy Hall of several former faculty members. Dr. Greg Kessler, who is now professor and department chair of Innovative Learning Design & Technology Educational Studies in the Patton College of Education, presents on Feb. 25. Also returning to Gordy Hall will be alumna and former visiting professor . Ghanem, who is now an assistant professor of applied linguistics at Northern Arizona University, will be presenting in-person in Gordy 301 on April 8.

Other former faculty will present via TEAMS. Former chair of the Linguistics Department , now chair of the Linguistics Department at the University of Utah, will present on Feb. 11,  and , former visiting professor and now assistant professor of applied linguistics at Wenzhou-Kean University, Wenzhou, will present from China on April 22. There is a 13-hour time difference, so Cho will be starting her presentation at 1:55 a.m. in the morning in China.

There will also be alumni presentations via TEAMS in the spring: Rickey Larkin Jr. 鈥20MA, now a Ph.D. student at the University of Hawai驶i at M膩noa; Tetiana Tytko 鈥20MA, now a Ph.D. student at the University of Maryland; Dr. He Sun 鈥10MA, research scientist at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore; and Nuo Xu 鈥16MA, now a Ph.D. student at the University of Utah.

There also will be presentations from current Linguistics faculty Dr. HyoJung Keira Park and Dr. Liang Tao.

And finally on March 25, emeriti, current, and former faculty, staff, and alumni will meet to remember 50 years of the Linguistics Department.

鈥淲e are really looking forward to everyone joining us again this spring, either live in person or via Microsoft TEAMS Fridays 12:55 to 1:50 p.m. to celebrate our anniversary,鈥 said Dr. David Bell, chair of the Linguistics Department, who also invited alumni and friends to add their names to the donor wall by making a gift, of whatever amount, to the .

Bell noted that all funds go to support student registration and travel expenses to conferences where they will present their research.
