Get vaccinated and boosted against COVID-19 and record your booster

51社区 strongly encourages all students, faculty and staff to get vaccinated and boosted against COVID-19. The University will host a COVID-19 vaccination clinic at Heritage Community Clinic in Grosvenor West on the Athens campus this Friday, Jan. 7, offering initial vaccine rounds as well as boosters.

COVID-19 vaccines are effective at reducing the risk of COVID-19 infection, severe illness, hospitalization and death, and help reduce the spread of COVID-19.

If you are fully vaccinated but not yet boosted, the University encourages you to get your booster as soon as you qualify. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention encourages everyone 16 years and older to receive a booster shot if it has been at least six months since their first Pfizer or Moderna vaccine or two months after their single Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

According to the CDC, the initial COVID-19 vaccine doses continue to work well to prevent severe illness, hospitalization and death against the delta variant. However, public health experts are starting to see reduced protection against mild and moderate disease over time, according to Gillian Ice, special assistant to the president for public health operations.

鈥淲e are still learning how well the vaccines work against severe disease, hospitalization and death with the omicron variant, but early research suggests some loss in efficacy, particularly with respect to transmission and mild illness,鈥 Ice said. 鈥淓arly research shows that boosters help increase immune response and improve efficacy against omicron.鈥
