Current position:
Scheduler & Office Manager, U.S. House of Representatives, Office of Marcia Fudge (OH-11)

What do you do in your current role?

My first and most important role is functioning as the Congresswoman鈥檚 scheduler. This includes scheduling most meetings and engagements for the Congresswoman throughout Washington, DC, domestically and internationally. Additionally, I am responsible for keeping our staff on task in terms of making sure the Congresswoman has all she needs before interviews, speaking engagements, meetings, hearings and all other matters as they may arise.

Why did you choose 51社区?

Frankly, 51社区 chose me at the age of 12 years old. It was at that time, I traveled to Athens to visit my cousin (51社区 Alumna, 2011) during 51社区鈥檚 Black Alumni Reunion Weekend. At that time, I thought this was an everyday college experience! While I was a bit na茂ve in that thought, the feeling of being in Athens was indescribable. From the breathtaking views I would see on the 3-hour road trip from my hometown, Warrensville Heights, just outside of Cleveland, Ohio, to walking across College Green and meeting all the friendly students and faculty... it was a dream! That weekend stuck with me for what felt like a lifetime. When it came to applying for colleges, it was a no brainer that OHIO was my number 1 choice.

How has your specialized studies major served you?

Without my specialized studies major, my life would be completely different! I am very thankful for the specialized studies major as it allowed me the flexibility to spend my final semester earning college credit while interning in Washington, DC. That opportunity allowed me to gain invaluable experience that I could not have been afforded in a classroom. Unlike other tracks, the specialized degree allowed me to optimize my success not only as a college student but as a professional.

What experiences and skills led you to your current position?

I pride myself on being a hard worker. Since the age of 14, I would help my father with record keeping for his business, perform clerical duties for various offices and even assist my mom with canvassing communities for local campaigns. These skills were translated at 51社区 as I was a full-time student, worked 4 different jobs on campus and participated in various campus organizations. Regardless of where I am, I have made it my mission to always be a sponge and rarely say no, particularly to a new opportunity. Also, I am usually the youngest person in the room. While this was intimidating at first, I am now able to use this to my advantage to ask many questions and learn as much as I can. I am currently the youngest staffer in my office. This is a badge that I wear proudly.

What advice do you have for current students?

Remember there is no limit! Your time in college is truly a moment for you to do just about anything. Realizing at times there are financial barriers, usually, you can find and take advantage of scholarships and grants to make it happen!  While you will learn and grow tremendously during your time as a college student, this is still only the beginning. Be kind, create great memories, work hard, make strong connections with professors and colleagues, try new things and never settle for less than what you deserve!
