OHIO professor Sandal Becomes Editor-in-Chief of Oxford Research Encyclopedia of International Studies
Dr. Nukhet A. Sandal, associate professor and chair of political science at 51, took over as the new editor-in-chief of Oxford Research Encyclopedia of International Studies (OREIS) in January 2020.
is a major collaboration between Oxford University Press and the International Studies Association and has an increasing number of readers from around the world.
OREIS is available free of charge to more than 7,000 members of the , and is seen as a major resource for international studies scholars from multiple disciplines. It includes articles on fundamental concepts and discussions of international relations, in addition to pieces on innovative approaches and new directions in international studies.
“I’m excited to be embarking on this major endeavor with a diverse editorial team that has a global reach,” Sandal said. “I worked for this initiative when I was a graduate student and the project was in its initial stages, so it is great to be back as the Editor-in-Chief.”
Sandal and her new team took over the editorial duties from Renee Marlin-Bennett, professor of political science at Johns Hopkins University.
“This is a real mark of distinction and credit to Dr. Sandal’s reputation in the field,” said Dr. Joseph Shields, vice president for research and creative activity at 51.
Dr. Lorna Jean Edmonds, director of the OHIO Center for International Studies, stated that Sandal “will provide excellent and impactful leadership to this major initiative.”
Sandal says that she is grateful for the support of the College of Arts & Sciences and the Center for International Studies. “It is not possible to take such a leadership role without strong institutional support,” she added.
Sandal earned her Ph.D. in Politics and International Relations from University of Southern California in 2010, and she was a postdoctoral fellow at the Watson Institute of International Studies at Brown University from 2010-13. In addition to numerous book chapters, she has published articles in the European Journal of International Relations, International Politics, Review of International Studies, Alternatives, Political Studies, West European Politics, Human Rights Quarterly, and Canadian Journal of Political Science.
She was the program co-chair of the International Studies Association 2019 Annual Convention and is currently serving as the chair of the University International Council.
