Student Enhancement Awards provide $131,187 in funding to 27 students

The 51社区 Student Enhancement Awards program has provided 27 students with a total of $131,187 in funding for their original research, scholarship and creative work this spring.

The Student Enhancement Awards are funded by the Office of the Vice President for Research and Creative Activity and administered by the Council for Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity, which is appointed by Faculty Senate.

The program received 89 proposals with a total funding request of $481,543. Students may request up to $6,000 per proposal.

The 2018 recipients are:

Kelli Baxstrom (graduate student, Geological Sciences; mentor: Gregory Springer) received $4,804 for Stalagmites and Wildfires.

Andrew Bryant (graduate student, Psychology; mentor: Julie Suhr) received $5,056 for Testing the Moderating Effects of Resting State Functional Connectivity on the Effectiveness of Transcranial Direct Current Simulation for Improving Working Memory Performances in Older Adults.

Erin Clark (graduate student, Visual Communications; mentor: Stan Alost) received $5,700 for Western Cree Perspectives on Traditional Food Practices, Ethnobotany and Food Sovereignty.

Theresa Egan (graduate student, Psychology; mentor: Brian Wymbs) received $3,474 for Examining Elementary School Teacher Preferences for School-based Intervention Characteristics and Implementation Supports for Youth with Attention-deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

Tess Herman (graduate student, Journalism; mentor: Bernhard Debatin) received $5,700 for Biogas Community Film.

Nazgol Taghinejad Kashani (graduate student, Film; mentor: Rafal Sokolowski) received $5,700 for May She Rest in Peace.

Hannah Kassab (graduate student, Psychology; mentor: Julie Ownes) received $4,964 for Using Social Network Analysis to Examine the Impact of a Teacher-implemented Social Inclusion Intervention.

Kateryna Kolnogorova (graduate student, Psychology; mentor: Nicholas Allan) received $5,630 for Anxious Apprehension and Frontal Alpha EEG Asymmetry.

Matt Love (graduate student, Film; mentor: Steven Ross) received $5,700 for Clover.

Alexander Lovelace (graduate student, History; mentor: Ingo Trauschweizer) received $4,992 for Total Coverage:  How the Media Shaped Total War.

Samanta Margherio (graduate student, Psychology; mentor: Steven Evans) received $3,316 for Cost-Effectiveness Analysis of a Training Intervention.

Amy Mehman (medical student, Biomedical Sciences; mentor: Ramiro Malgor) received $5,700 for Investigating the Expression of Wnt5a Isoforms in Urothelial Carcinoma.

Bri Murphy (graduate student, Ceramics; mentor: Alex Hibbitt) received $5,700 for 3D Printing in Clay:  Expanded Strategies for New Works.

James Nassif (graduate student, Biomedical Sciences; mentor: Lawrence Witmer) received $5,689 for Assessing the Form and Function of the Hearing Apparatus in Dinosaurs.

Jane Oberhauser and Joseph Juratovac (graduate students, Mechanical Engineering; mentor: Timothy Cyders) received $5,291 for Multi-factor Study on the Fatigue Pathways in Direct Metal Laser Sintering Material.

Rachel Olson (graduate student, Biomedical Sciences; mentor: Susan Williams) received $5,700 for Comparative Insights into the Anatomy, Function, and Biomechanics of the Mammalian Tongue.

Matthew Perlman (graduate student, Psychology; mentor: Timothy Anderson) received $3,800 for A New Paradigm for Psychotherapist Development:  Alliance-focused Training and Facilitative Interpersonal Skills. 

Cheng Qi (graduate student, Biological Sciences; mentor: Daewoo Lee) received $4,611 for The Role of Dopamine D2 Receptor in Drosophila Larval Learning.

Gina Sacchetti (graduate student, Psychology; mentor: Brian Wymbs) received $5,700 for Predicting Risky Sexual Behaviors in College Students:  A Daily Diary Study.

Pratik Shriwas (graduate student, Biomedical Sciences; mentor: Xiaozhuo Chen) received $5,696 for Characterization of a Novel Anticancer Agent In Vitro.

Julie Slyby (undergraduate student, HTC Biology and Edison Biotechnology Institute; mentor: Edward List) received $5,683 for The Effects of Obesity and Weight Cycling on Oxidative Damage.

Sarah Smith (graduate student, Environmental and Plant Biology; mentor: Rebecca Snell) received $4,007 for Causes of Individual Variation in Reproductive Effort in Two Species of Oak.

Anne Sternberger (graduate student, Environmental and Plant Biology; mentors: Harvey Ballard and Sarah Wyatt) received $5,695 for The Role of MicroRNAs in Chasmogamous and Cleistogamus Flowering of Viola pubescens.

Inna Tsyrlin (graduate student, Theater; mentor: Charles Smith) received $3,584 for Stitched with a Sickle and Hammer.

Joel Wyatt (graduate student, Psychology; mentor: Christine Gidycz) received $3,953 for Examining Sexual Assault in Same-sex Situations:  A Comparison of Sexual Minority and Heterosexual College Students.

Rachel Zapf (graduate student, Biological Sciences; mentor: Ronan Carroll) received $5,341 for Clarifying the Mechanism of the Small RNA Teg41 and Its Effects on Staphylococcus aureus Virulence.
